Leaf Season Green Waste Guide

October is when the valley sheds. Jeffrey pines drop needles by the bushel, the oaks and aspens let go of their leaves, and the first real wind of the season brings down whatever was hanging on. It lands on roofs, in gutters, and across every driveway in Big Bear Lake, and most of it belongs in one place: your green waste cart.
What Goes In
Pine needles, leaves, grass clippings, small trimmings, and soft plant material all go in the green cart. Limbs and brush are fine too, as long as each piece is under 4 feet long and 3 inches in diameter. Anything larger needs to be cut down or handled another way.
What Stays Out
No dirt, rocks, or sod. No lumber, fencing, or treated wood. No bagged material inside the cart, and no plastic of any kind. Yard waste in a plastic bag cannot be processed and gets pulled from the load.
When the Cart Is Not Enough
Every Big Bear Lake resident gets a 96-gallon green waste cart at no charge. When needle season outruns it, you can set out up to 5 additional bags of green waste at the curb on your pick-up day. If you do not have a cart at all, the limit is 15 bags a week. Use paper lawn bags or set brush out tied in bundles under the size limits above.
For a full property clear-out, a Rent-a-Bin is the easier route. Call (909) 866-3942 to schedule one.
Why It Matters Beyond the Curb
Dry needles and leaves piled against a house are fuel. Clearing them in October, before the first snow packs everything down, is one of the simplest things you can do for defensible space heading into the season. It also keeps gutters draining and roofs dry when the weather turns.
