Winter Safety: Proper Care and Disposal of Ashes

Fireplaces and wood stoves are common during winter months, but ashes can remain hot long after a fire has gone out. Improper disposal can lead to serious fire hazards, so it is important to handle ashes with care.
Ashes must be thoroughly soaked with water until fully cooled and soupy, ensuring there is no remaining heat. Once soaked, the ashes should be placed in a securely tied bag and then placed inside your refuse (trash) cart for collection. Ashes should never be placed loose in carts.
For safety reasons, dry or loose ashes are not allowed, and ashes should never be placed in recycling carts, green waste carts, plastic bags on their own, or left curbside in open containers.
Following these steps helps protect your home, your neighbors, and our collection crews from accidental fires and ensures safe winter service for everyone.
